Tennessee Benefit Kitchen Launches To Help Local Residents Access Unclaimed Benefits

by | May 18, 2023

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (May 18, 2023)United Way of Greater Chattanooga is excited to promote the recently launched Tennessee Benefit Kitchen free screener tool that allows all Tennesseans to easily determine eligibility for benefits they qualify for and how to apply for them. Tennessee residents can text “Benefits” to 211-211 to get started.

“At United Way, we pay special attention to a metric called ‘ALICE,’ which stands for asset-limited, income-constrained, but employed,” said Abby Garrison, Vice President of Community Investments. “Adults in ALICE families are often working multiple jobs to make ends meet. Tennessee Benefit Kitchen offers these families access to unclaimed
benefits for which they may qualify. It’s a powerful tool to help families find financial stability.”

To get started, Tennessee residents will answer a few questions that will take 5 to 10 minutes to complete. After the screener, they immediately receive notice of tax credits and benefits for which they are eligible. They will also receive links to apply to each benefit. The tax credits and benefits covered in the screener currently include:
• Food Stamps (SNAP)
• Cash Assistance (TANF)
• Women Infants and Children (WIC)
• Head Start
• School Meals
• Child Care Assistance
• TennCare (Medicaid, for adults and children)
• ACA (Affordable Care Act for adults and children)
• CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program)
• County Medical Services
• Home Energy Assistance (HEAP)
• Lifeline
