Events are survival for many nonprofits, yet so many events are in flux right now. We’re all trying to figure out how to host them virtually, and in some cases, whether to even have them at all. We know that successfully transitioning events from in-person to virtual is a heavy lift.

Luckily, our friend Clark at event media agency RVRB joined us to share advice on how to make that transition—and how to do it well. He gave us hope that the switch to virtual events presents some exciting opportunities.

Their equation for a successful virtual event is pretty basic:

Clear Messaging + Simple Programming + the Right Tech = Success.

In a virtual world, you can’t hide behind fancy decor and dramatic event production. Take the time to prep your words and your connection with the audience. Set aside time to practice what you’re going to say, and slow down when you deliver it. Remember, clarity is key.

Another key insight RVRB shared is that virtual events are all about keeping people’s attention. While this is certainly true of all events, engaging programming is even more important for virtual events because people can simply leave the event or tune out without anyone knowing. There’s no social pressure to behave like there is in a room full of people!

5 Biggest Mistakes people make on virtual events:

  1. PROGRAMMING LIKE IT’S 2019 AGAIN

  2. LACK OF VIRTUAL INTERACTION

  3. EVENT IS TOO LONG

  4. A BORING HOST

  5. OVERCOMPLICATING TECHNOLOGY WITHOUT HELP

Though content is king, the technology tools you use to deliver that message are still vitally important. Want to learn more about the specific tools and platforms RVRB recommends to avoid common mistakes and deliver a top notch virtual event? Watch the whole video and you’ll get a full breakdown of their recs, as well as live advice he gave Venture Forward members Thrive Regional Partnership and Scenic City Women’s Network.
