Local ALICE Insights

ALICE households—Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed—represent our neighbors, co-workers, and families who work hard but still can’t make ends meet. Learn how you can advocate and support them today.

Who is ALICE?

ALICE stands for asset limited, income constrained, and employed. Households that fall under ALICE face different levels of financial strain and access to essential resources that make it difficult to afford basic necessities, despite being employed and hard-working. These households face hard choices such as putting food on the table or paying the light bill every single day.

What’s the research?

Since first investing in the ALICE research several years ago, we have relied on this extensive body of work to help guide our community investments, programs, and advocacy work. By sharing our research publicly, we hope our community partners will reference the ALICE reports for their own decision-making that impacts working families every day.

ALICE: Children in Focus

The recent ALICE: Children in Focus Tennessee Report reveals that 53% of children in Tennessee are below the ALICE threshold, with many families facing challenges like high rent burdens and limited access to high-speed internet. Financial hardship is particularly high for infants and preschoolers, with over half of children in Hamilton County impacted. This data highlights the need for targeted support to improve living conditions and resources for Tennessee families.
