Organization and Mission

Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that restores the vital connection between people and nature. Filling an important need for ecological education in our technology-driven world, we envision a healthier, more creative city whose residents become stewards of their natural surroundings. Reflection Riding provides opportunities for all people to connect with nature. Through programming, events, partnerships, and customer service, we strive to create an immersive learning environment for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Our goal is to facilitate learning experiences that engage people and create lifelong learners and conservationists while helping to restore the native biodiversity on our property and within our community.

Position Description

A Seasonal Naturalist is a hands-on position requiring a strong environmental work ethic, enthusiasm, and curiosity for all things nature. Naturalists help with day-to-day operations while working with volunteers and staff members to complete their work. This includes but is not limited to, environmental education, ecology, and conservation in a public-facing position requiring a passion for teaching and public engagement. Naturalists engage the public on native plants and animals and the work we do at Reflection Riding.

Primary Duties

  • Interact with and communicate ecological knowledge to the public
  • Teach engaging programs for people of all backgrounds and ages, including field trips, summer camps, etc.
  • Learn to identify native and exotic invasive flora and fauna
  • Learn the native ecology and biodiversity of our region
  • Work in ecological areas around the property
  • Begin to create a working knowledge of our native ecosystems and their interactions
  • Remove invasive species mechanically and by hand-pulling
  • Work with and support volunteers
  • Manage parking for groups, unlock and lock facilities, exhibits, and gates for opening and closing hours, and work events as needed.
  • Assist with other RRANC departments and staff as needed

Position Requirements

  • Be an outdoor enthusiast with a passion for learning about native species and habitat restoration
  • Possess a working knowledge of native plants and animals
  • Possessing a basic understanding of plant and animal identification
  • Be willing to help develop nature-based programming and facilitation
  • Be 18 years of age or older, interested in pursuing a career in environmental education and/or conservation
  • Be willing and able to learn while working in an outdoor setting in inclement weather
  • Be careful, enthusiastic, engaging, and a team player

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical and environmental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a Part-Time Naturalist to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. This opportunity is an outdoor and active position. This Part-Time Naturalist position requires lifting and carrying materials up to 50 lbs. and having good physical agility and an extensive range of motion. Reflection Riding is an outdoor facility, so all personnel must be able to spend time in areas with allergens and maintain a high level of performance even in inclement weather including but not limited to rain, snow, and high and low temperatures. When carrying out the duties of this position, a Naturalist must be willing to be out in the elements (we work rain or shine) and exposed to allergens, yellow jackets, wasps, mosquitoes, and other pests.
