CommUNITY School After School Program Assistant
Reports To: CommUNITY School Coordinator
Location: Middle or high school located in Hixson, Red Bank, Soddy-Daisy, or Sales Creek.
Classification: Part-Time, Hourly, Non Exempt

Since 1924, the Northside Neighborhood House has focused on empowering residents north of the Tennessee River to create thriving communities across northern Hamilton County. From ensuring individuals are housed with working utilities to supporting students in achieving academic success, the NNH focuses on creating relationships and connecting individuals to supports that aid them in creating stability for themselves and their families.
Program Summary:
Through our CommUNITY School model, Northside Neighborhood House CommUNITY School Coordinators and Program Assistants partner with school administration to identify and provide wrap-around support to meet the physical, social, and emotional needs of the school community. This work focuses on the six key practices of the national community school model:

Position Summary:
The CommUNITY School Program Assistant plays a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming, and enriching after-school environment for enrolled students. Working closely with the CommUNITY School Coordinator, this role involves leading activities that encourage academic success, personal growth, and social-emotional learning. The Program Assistant is a hands-on mentor and role model, fostering a culture of belonging, safety, and care while supporting each student’s unique potential.
What You’ll Do:
Assist the CommUNITY School Coordinator in planning and delivering engaging after-school activities that align with student needs and interests
Lead and supervise small and large groups of students during learning, recreational, and enrichment activities
Build authentic relationships with students that encourage positive behavior and participation
Facilitate fun and educational enrichment activities such as arts and crafts, sports, and group games
Provide homework help and tutoring, encouraging students in their academic success
Support and encourage volunteers as they mentor and engage with students
Prepare and distribute snacks or meals, ensuring adherence to dietary guidelines
Maintain a safe and respectful environment by reinforcing behavioral expectations and promoting positive interactions
Set up, clean, and organize activity areas and supplies
Attend staff meetings and participate in professional development opportunities

Perform additional duties as assigned by the CommUNITY School Coordinator

Qualifications:
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required
Some college coursework in education, social work, or related fields preferred
Experience working with youth in a school, after-school, camp, or mentoring program required
Experience with behavior management and conflict resolution preferred
Skills & Abilities
Ability to develop strong, positive relationships with middle and high school students
Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to engage with students, families, staff, and volunteers
Ability to follow directions, ask clarifying questions, and take initiative
Proficient in basic computer use (Chromebook), including clocking in/out, completing training modules, and conducting internet searches
Creative, energetic, and adaptable with a can-do attitude
Commitment to NNH’s core values and mission to serve the community
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Work Schedule
Monday – Thursday from 1:45 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. during the school year
At least one Friday per month for one hour of professional development
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for up to 3 hours at a time
Engage in physical activities with students (indoors and outdoors)
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
Mobility to move around various school spaces and activity areas
Expected hours: 12 – 15 per week
