Website A Step Ahead Chattanooga

About Us

A Step Ahead Chattanooga’s mission is to remove barriers to contraception through education, outreach, and access to birth control. We serve 18 counties across Southeast Tennessee, Northwest Georgia, and Northeast Alabama, providing free preventative birth control services to anyone in our service area who needs them. We believe every person should have the opportunity to achieve their big goals at work, at home, and in their relationships and that accessing reproductive healthcare should be easy, not complicated.

About the Role

Under the supervision of the Marketing Director, the Social Media & Content Writing Intern will help create engaging, educational content that translates complex health information into social media posts, short-form videos, blog articles, and other digital content that feels like it’s coming from a trusted friend, not a textbook or clinic. You’ll brainstorm ideas, develop content that addresses common questions and concerns, and help us reach people who might not know our services exist.

Responsibilities

  • Develop original content ideas that educate our community about contraception, reproductive health, and our free services
  • Create social media posts, blog articles, infographics, and other digital content that make reproductive health information accessible and engaging
  • Research common questions, myths, and concerns about birth control to inform content strategy
  • Write clear, compassionate, medically accurate copy that speaks to diverse audiences
  • Brainstorm and execute creative campaigns around reproductive health awareness, Thanks Birth Control Day, and other relevant dates

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong writing skills with the ability to explain health topics in clear, accessible language
  • Passion for reproductive health, health equity, and removing barriers to care
  • Creative mindset with ideas for making educational content engaging and shareable
  • Comfort discussing reproductive health topics in a professional, judgment-free manner
  • Understanding of social media platforms and how different audiences engage with content
  • Ability to research and fact-check health information using credible sources
  • Empathy and cultural sensitivity when creating content for diverse communities
  • Self-starter who can work independently and take initiative
  • Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a relevant program (Public Health, Communications, Journalism, Women’s and Gender Studies, Social Work, Marketing, or related field)
  • Experience using Canva and video editing tools like CapCut or similar

Bonus Points

  • Personal interest or coursework in reproductive health, public health, or health communication
  • Experience creating educational or health-related content
  • Familiarity with health literacy principles
  • Bilingual (Spanish)
  • Connection to or understanding of the Chattanooga/tri-state community

What You’ll Gain

  • Hands-on experience in health communication and reproductive health advocacy
  • Portfolio of published educational content that makes a real difference in your community
  • Understanding of nonprofit marketing and mission-driven storytelling
  • Knowledge of reproductive health topics and best practices in health education
  • Mentorship from experienced professionals in public health and communications
  • The satisfaction of knowing your work helps people access life-changing healthcare
